L'enfer c'est les autres

The starting point of this creation was born from a choreographic analysis of my work up until now, which places extreme importance on “relationships.”

Jean-Paul Sartre’s famous quote in his play “No Exit,” “Hell is other people,” greatly inspired me to begin developing the creation around relationships with others and oneself.

It is thanks to others that I can have knowledge, a consciousness of who I am. There is therefore a very close link between self-consciousness and the presence of others according to Sartre. We always need others to define ourselves. This means that we must not flee from others, but that we must flee certain relationships that petrify us in an identity that we do not like and that harms us. When the only image we have of ourselves joins the distorted image that others send back to us, like a broken mirror, then others become “hell.”

The research develops around the question of the coexistence of consciousnesses, the fact that others are what alienate us and confine us to a given nature, depriving us of our freedom.”
